When I found out we had to make StoryCorps Interviews of our own, I immediately thought of my cousin Jamie. There was so much I wanted to learn about him, but I never knew how to ask. This was the perfect opportunity. It took me forever to figure out how I was going to ask him if he’d want to be interviewed. Now that I think about it, I’m not sure why I was so cautious. Usually people don’t think twice when they want to tell their cousins anything, and I wish I was able to do the same..
I remember being surprised when he was totally down for being interviewed. He said he’d do anything for me. I don’t think I heard him tell me those words ever before. He also said that I would have to pay him. I know I definitely heard that :’)
When he came over, and we finally got to the interview, everything else stopped. I noticed so many details about him. Not once have I noticed how he plays with his hands when talks, how he brushes his fingers along his lightly shaved beard when he’s thinking, and how his leg quickly taps the edge of his seat when he’s nervous.
I can’t say I’m surprised by anything he said simply because I didn’t know half of it existed. You can’t really be surprised when you were completely clueless as to how someone would respond regardless. Before, we never really got past anything other than small talks and movie discussions. So I guess you can say that even though I came up with that title as a joke, it really was That One Time With My Cousin.
